Harvard Medical School

In the spring of 2005, Harvard students petitioned the Harvard Medical School administration, asking the body to provide “… a student lounge that would give MD and PhD students a place to mix, mingle, and share ideas with other students and postdocs.”

The result? A lounge space featuring rich architectural details augmented by Fabricoil® partitions. Named for the school’s dean whose efforts helped bring the lounge to life, the project was completed in June of the following year.

The Joseph B. Martin Student Lounge features antique furniture such as classic wingback chairs, real-wood paneling and millwork, wallpaper reminiscent of Europe’s Romantic Era, and a baby grand Steinway piano. Juxtaposed against these more classic design choices are 3/16” Fabricoil partitions in Antique Bronze.

The coiled wire fabric is secured with Cascade’s Secura Track attachments, which allow for easy sliding operation of the systems. Fabricoil provides segmentation of the lounge without sectioning off entire portions of the room. Even as a partition, coiled wire curtains still allow light and views to pass through the material to maintain the open, collaborative atmosphere that the medical students sought for the space.
